State of Arizona thinking about reinstating jury trials for DUI cases
Posted on Monday, February 20th, 2012 at 7:10 pm
A bill that went into effect in December 2011 changed the way that DUI offenders had their cases heard in court. According to the new bill, only repeat extreme DUI offenders would have the privilege of a jury trial, even though first time offenders could possibly spend six months in jail if convicted of their charge.
The House Judiciary Committee of the state believe that the wording should be changed in this bill in order to include first time offenders as well. They believe that all persons accused of driving under the influence in the state of Arizona have the right to a trial by jury.
The House Bill that is being proposed would eliminate the wording regarding former DUI convictions, and would open the jury option to all offenders. The bill needs to be passed by the House as well as the Senate before being approved by the Arizona governor.

Man sentenced to 6 years in jail after 13th DUI conviction
Posted on Tuesday, February 14th, 2012 at 7:10 pm
A 55-year-old California man has been sentenced to six years in jail for violating probation on his 13th DUI conviction.
He was arrested in the summer of 2010 for his 13th driving under the influence charge and was sentenced to six years behind bars. The judge in the case determined that if the man completed a drug rehabilitation program for one year, that the prison time could be deterred during the duration of the program.
The defendant chose to leave the rehabilitation program before it was completed, and was arrested for the violation of his probation. He admitted in court that he had a drinking problem, and the judge said he should be grateful that he never seriously injured someone during his drunk driving episodes.

New Arizona DUI Interlock Rules Now in Place
Posted on Monday, January 16th, 2012 at 7:32 pm
When someone is convicted of driving under the influence in the state of Arizona, they are required to install a DUI Interlock device in their car for the next year.
The driver must blow into this device every time they want to turn the engine on and if any alcohol is detected by the system, the engine will not start. Arizona Senator, Linda Gray, voiced her opinion that one year of using this device is too long. She made the proposition that first-time DUI offenders only need to use the interlock device for six months after their conviction.
This new time frame was put into place on January 1, 2012 and will only apply to individuals who are convicted of driving under the influence in 2012.
