Driving Records

A person convicted of DUI or another alcohol related crime can expect to see this charge appear both on his or her criminal record and his or her driving record. The state determines how long a DUI will remain on a person’s record. These charges can linger on a person’s record for an indefinite period of time if the state legal code works that way.

Managing a Record

Different states offer different options when it comes to removing a criminal charge from a person’s record. Some states will allow an alcohol-related offense to be removed or expunged in certain circumstances. However, the following issues can arise with a DUI charge on a criminal or driving record:

  • Expungement orders may not be available for DUI crimes
  • DUI convictions can build up points on a driver’s license
  • DUI convictions may not disappear from a driving record over time

Often, a person may try to wait out their state’s period for keeping a DUI on a person’s record. However, expungement can help speed up this process. Unfortunately, there are some states that will keep a DUI conviction on a record indefinitely, making legal defense at the time of the charge a priority.
